Princeton Depot and Brooks Station

In 1871 the Boston, Barre and Gardner Railroad was opened and came from Worcester to Gardner through Princeton. Read "Boston, Barre, Gardner RxR" from a talk in 1956 by Philip M. Morgan!

At its peak, 9 trains a day arrived at Brooks Station on Brook Station Road and The Depot on Hubbardston Road.

Guests were transported to the numerous guest houses and hotels via stagecoach or horse and wagon. Most afternoons the Princeton stations were very busy, especially on Saturday afternoons in the summer months when business men would arrive to spend the weekend with their families.

Stage from The Depot with hotel guest approaching the 4 corners formed by Allen Hill, Radford, and Hubbardston Roads. This view is from Pratt's cottage (most recently the Chapman house) toward the Crowley and Gal homes of today. The Crowley house was at one time rotated 180 degrees and the left-hand portion of the Gal house was removed.

The Railroad Station on Brooks Station Road was built in . Trains would stopped here for water for their steam engines. An ice house was built across the street, and in the summer the trains stopped to pick up ice and take it back to the city. Read more!
